I am overjoyed and as always so, so grateful for the generous support of my family and friends. This certainly is a blessed holiday season!

Dear Friends,

LIGHT UP THE NIGHT- while visibly very American - was in a large part inspired by the children of Uganda, many of whom are orphaned by AIDS while others have been displaced due to past civil war. My family has developed strong connections to that country and its children over the past 6 years.

To celebrate the release of the book and honor those beautiful children, I decided to hold this online auction to benefit literacy in Africa and a library at Musana Children's Home in Iganga, Uganda where I worked last summer.

I'm coordinating this effort with the volunteers for an amazing Peace Corps project called Libraries for Life - which is providing books for libraries in designated Ugandan schools. The project is being administered by, not only the Peace Corps, but also the Books for Africa organization. And Musana has been designated as one of the recipient libraries.

Please know that each and every day I continue to support public libraries, school libraries and literacy programs here in the U.S. But this auction will reach across the ocean to benefit efforts abroad.

I know all of you, as caring and generous as you are, have your own special passions and causes. So I don't want you to feel any pressure here, especially during such difficult economic times. But if, by chance, this project of mine touches you in any way, I hope you can participate in some way - big or small.

Thanks so much for stopping by. Please feel free to share this with anyone who may be interested.
From the book:
On Thursday morning, May 2, 1963, nine-year-old Audrey Faye Hendricks woke up with freedom on her mind. But, before she could be free, she knew she had to go to jail.

“I want to go to jail,” Audrey told her mother.

Since Mr. and Mrs. Hendricks thought that was a good idea, they helped her get ready. First, her father bought her a game she’d been eyeing. She imagined that Operation, in which you take the bones out of a plastic figure and put them back together, would entertain her if she got bored during her week on a cellblock.

Then, her mother took her to Center Street Elementary so she could tell her third-grade teacher why she’d be absent. Miss Wills cried. Audrey knew she was proud of her.
Talk to her about the stories, about writing or just to say hello. Item will ship in time for Christmas (U.S. addresses only).

About the books: ONE DAY AND ONE AMAZING MORNING ON ORANGE STREET and DEAR BABY are two of the authors' favorites because of the joy they brought her while writing them.

ONE DAY AND ONE AMAZING MORNING ON ORANGE STREET: When a mysterious man arrives one day on Orange Street in Los Angeles, the children who live on the block try to find out who he is and why he's there. Little do they know that his story - and the story of a very old orange tree - connects to each of their personal worries in ways they never could have imagined. From impressing friends to dealing with an expanding family to understanding a younger sibling's illness, the characters' storylines come together around that orange tree.

Taking place over the course of a day and a half, Joanne Rocklin's middle grade novel builds a story about family, childhood anxieties, and the importance of connection. In the end the fate of the tree (and the kids who care for it) reminds us of the magic of the everyday and of the rich history all around us.

SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL says it's " Fascinating and thought-provoking, the writing has a gentle cadence, richness in detail, and is charged with emotion. The book, like the oranges on the Orange Street tree, presents segments of life that are both sweet and tart and sure to satisfy."

About Tim Reidy: In addition to being my son, hardly his claim to fame, Tim is a classically-trained architect from the University of Notre Dame who spent a year in Rome studying, not only architecture, but also watercolor painting. He currently lives in Fairbanks, Alaska where he works on projects ranging from wilderness lodges to fire stations. But Tim holds strong emotional ties to another "home" - Uganda - where he performed service work and research over the course of four years. Tim's Notre Dame honors thesis researched the traditional vernacular of Ugandan architecture and the redesign of two Ugandan refugee camps near Gulu. The design incorporated that traditional vernacular, sustainable design and local materials. The inspiration for this auction was in large part due to Tim.
Three years ago, Persia ran away from her drug-addict parents and found a home with the Outlaws, an underground theater troupe. This motley band of mortals and fey, puppeteers and actors, becomes the loving family Persia never had, and soon Persia not only discovers a passion for theater but also falls in love with Nicholas, one of the other Outlaws. Life could not be more perfect.

Until an enemy with a grudge makes an unfair accusation against the group and forces them to flee the mortal world and hide in the neighboring realm of Faerie. But in Faerie, all is not flowers and rainbows—with bloodthirsty trolls, a hostile monarchy, and a dangerous code of magic, the fey world is not quite the safe haven the Outlaws had hoped for. And they must decide what’s more important: protecting their right to perform or protecting themselves.

From critically acclaimed author Penny Blubaugh comes this mesmerizing tale of family, faeries, and finding a place to call home.
Item Description: Whenever Ava can't sleep, she counts sheep. But Ava takes so long to fall asleep, it's the sheep that are growing tired—until finally, they quit! When the sheep promise to find a replacement that Ava can count on, chaos ensues as chickens, cows, pigs, hippos, and more try their hand at jumping over Ava's fence. Finding the perfectly peaceful replacement for sheep might not be so easy after all. With irresistibly adorable art, this delightful take on a familiar sleep tactic is sure to become a bedtime favorite.
